cellophane の語源・成り立ち Etymology
20世紀初頭のフランス語 cellophane から広まった語で、cellulose「セルロース」とギリシャ語由来の -phane「見える・透明な」を合わせた造語です。つまり「繊維素からできた透明なもの」という名で、cellular や diaphanous にも同系の発想が残ります。
Cellophane was coined in French in the early twentieth century and combines cellulose with an element derived from Greek phainein, “to show” or “make appear.” The name therefore describes a transparent material made from cellulose. It became widely used as a product name for the clear wrapping film and later as a common noun. The same Greek root appears in words concerned with appearing, showing, or transparency.
