政府が人口統計を取るために定期的に行う全国規模の調査のことです。人数、職業などを調べます。
A census is an official count of the people living in a country or area. Governments usually collect this information to learn about population size and other social details. It is often done at regular intervals and used for planning and policy.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
census は「国全体を数えて把握する調査」とセットで覚えると強い。ふつうの survey より範囲が広く、政府が人口・職業・世帯などを定期的に集める場面で使う語。population census, national census という形も頻出。つづりは consensus（合意）とかなり似ていて紛らわしいが、意味は無関係なので必ず切り分ける。count・population・government など数字と行政の語と結びつけると、「国が公式に人数データを集計する調査」という像で定着しやすい。

censusはラテン語censusに由来し、さらにcensere「評価する・査定する」にさかのぼります。古代ローマでは人数だけでなく財産や身分も調べたため、単なる数え上げでなく「国家が人々を把握する調査」という意味になりました。関連語はcensor、censureです。
Census comes from Latin census, from censere, meaning "to assess," "judge," or "estimate." In ancient Rome, a census was not only a count of people but also an official check of property and social status. That is why the word kept the sense of a formal state survey, and it is related to censor and censure.
