demographic はフランス語 démographique を経て、ギリシャ語 dēmos「民衆」+ graphein「書く」に由来する。人々を記述する発想から、特徴で分けた集団の意味へ広がった。
Demographic comes through French démographique and goes back to Greek dēmos, meaning "people," and graphein, meaning "to write." It originally had the idea of describing people, and later developed into the meaning of a group defined by shared social features.
