解説 Definition

centaur はギリシャ神話に登場する、上半身が人間で下半身が馬の存在、ケンタウロスという意味です。日本語のカタカナ語とほぼ同じ意味ですが、英語では神話や物語の種族名として使われます。

A creature from Greek mythology whose upper body is human and whose lower body and legs are those of a horse. Centaurs appear in ancient art and stories and are often portrayed as powerful, wild, or skilled teachers and warriors.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

centaur は人間の上半身と馬の胴体・脚が一体になったギリシャ神話の存在です。human torso+horse’s body という二部分を一つの姿として思い浮かべましょう。固有の一個体名ではなく種族・存在を表す普通名詞なので、通常は a centaur、the centaurs のように小文字で使います。

Build one clear mental picture: a human head, arms, and torso joined to the body and four legs of a horse. That combined figure is a centaur. The word belongs especially to Greek mythology and commonly appears in phrases such as “a centaur holding a spear” or “a wise centaur teaching a hero.” Unlike the personal name of one particular mythological character, centaur is a common noun for the type of creature, so it is normally lowercase and can form a regular plural: centaurs.

centaur の語源・成り立ち Etymology

centaur はラテン語 centaurus を経て、ギリシャ語 Kentauros「ケンタウロス」に由来します。語の細かな分解は不確かですが、半人半馬の存在を指す固有名がそのまま英語に入った語で、異質なものが一体化した姿を思い浮かべると意味がつかみやすいです。関連語は centauric, hippocentaur。

Centaur entered English through Latin centaurus from Greek Kentauros, the name used for one of the mythical horse-bodied people. The deeper origin and internal analysis of the Greek word are uncertain, so claims that divide it into clearly meaningful roots should be treated cautiously. The classical name passed into English as the ordinary term for the half-human, half-horse creature represented in Greek myth and art.
