チンチラは南米原産の小型の齧歯類で、柔らかく密度の高い毛皮が特徴です。ペットとして飼われることもあり、夜行性で社交的な動物です。
A chinchilla is a small animal with very soft, thick fur, originally from South America. It is known both as a wild rodent and as a pet. The word can also refer to the animal's fur in fashion or trade contexts.

スペイン語 chinchilla から英語に入り、南米ペルーの Chincha 地方・民族名に結びつけて説明されることが多い語です。-illa は縮小辞なので「チンチャ地方の小さなもの」という形になり、土地名から動物名になったと考えると覚えやすいです。関連語は gorilla、mantilla。
Chinchilla came into English from Spanish chinchilla. It is often linked to the Chincha region or people of Peru, with the Spanish diminutive ending -illa adding the sense of something small. The name seems to have moved from a place or group name to the small animal associated with that area. The ending -illa also appears in other Spanish loanwords such as mantilla.
