chomp は方言的な champ の異形で、もともと物をがつがつ噛む音をまねた擬音的な語です。champ や champing と同根で、「意味が先にある」のではなく「噛む音そのもの」から語が育ったと考えると、ムシャムシャ感がそのまま動詞になったと納得できます。
Chomp is a variant of champ, a dialect word that was probably imitative in origin. It seems to have grown from the sound of chewing rather than from an older abstract root. That is why chomp and champing still feel close to the noisy action they describe.
