Chromatography was formed from Greek chroma, meaning “color,” and graphia, meaning “writing,” “recording,” or “description.” The term was adopted for a separation method in which plant pigments produced visible colored bands as they moved through a column. Although the name literally suggests recording colors, the technique was later extended far beyond pigments and is now used to separate and analyze many kinds of compounds, including colorless ones.
