Definition
A chronograph is a watch or other instrument that can measure and record elapsed time, usually through controls for starting, stopping, and resetting the measurement. It is commonly used for timing short events.
Memory Tip
Break chronograph into chrono-, relating to time, and -graph, relating to writing or recording. The literal picture is an instrument that “records time.” On a watch, a chronograph is the timing function operated with start, stop, and reset controls, much like a built-in stopwatch. Do not identify one only by decorative subdials; the important feature is its ability to measure elapsed time. Connect chrono- with chronology and -graph with photograph or seismograph to remember both the structure and the practical meaning.

Etymology
ギリシャ語chronos(時間)+graphein(書く)の合成語。 関連語:chronicle(年代記)、photograph(光で書く=写真)。
Chronograph was formed from Greek-based elements: chronos, “time,” and graphos or graphein, relating to writing or recording. Its literal sense is therefore a device that records time. The term became established for precision timing instruments in the nineteenth century, including devices that marked measured intervals. It was later applied widely to watches combining ordinary time display with a mechanism for measuring elapsed time. Chronicle and chronology share the same time-related root.
