Dunking is the action of putting something quickly into a liquid for a short time. It is often used for food and drink, and in sports it can also mean scoring by forcefully putting the ball through the basket.

dunking の dunk は語源がはっきりしないものの、英語方言で「液体にさっと浸す」を表したゲルマン系の語と考えられる。dunk や dunker が同根で、バスケでは「ボールをリングに浸すように入れる」動きがそのまま名称になった。
