接戦
解説 Definition
試合や選挙など、参加者や候補者の差がごくわずかで、どちらが勝っても不思議ではない競争を表す名詞句。最後まで勝敗が読みにくい、拮抗した競り合いを指す。
This noun phrase describes a game, election, or other competition in which the participants are separated by only a very small margin. Either side could win, so the outcome remains uncertain until near the end.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
close はここでは「差が小さい」、contest は「試合・競争」。合わせて close contest は、試合や選挙などで参加者の差がほとんどない「接戦」を表す。close game は主に試合、close race は選挙や競走に使うが、close contest はその両方を含められる。危機一髪や際どい判断を表す close call とは区別する。
Here, close means that the competitors are near each other in score or support, while contest means a competition. Remember that it can describe both sporting events and elections, unlike close call, which refers to a difficult decision or a narrow escape.

close contest の語源・成り立ち Etymology
closeはラテン語claudere(閉じる)からフランス語clos経由で英語に入り、「近い」の意味にも広がりました。callは古ノルド語kalla(呼ぶ)に由来し、のちに「判定・判断」も表します。close call は「非常に近い判定」という感覚から、勝負や選挙で差がわずかな「接戦」を指します。関連語:closure、recall。
Close entered English through French clos from Latin claudere and later developed the sense of being near.
