clout の語源・成り立ち Etymology
clout は古英語で「布切れ」を意味した clut にさかのぼり、中英語で「一撃・強打」の意味が生まれました。強く打つ力が比喩的に「人や状況を動かす力」となり、今の「影響力」へつながります。関連語は cloth です。
Clout goes back to Old English clut, which meant a piece of cloth or rag. In Middle English, it also came to mean a hard blow, probably from the idea of striking with a cloth or pad. From physical force, the meaning later widened to social or political force, giving the modern sense of influence or power. It is related to cloth.
