A cofactor is a non-protein substance that helps an enzyme work properly. It may be a metal ion or a small organic molecule. This word is mainly used in biology and chemistry.

co- は cooperate, coworker などで見慣れる「一緒に」、factor は factor in success のような「要因・働く要素」。そこで cofactor は、酵素そのものではないが、反応を進めるために横で一緒に働く要素と捉えると覚えやすいです。enzyme 単独では足りず、金属イオンや補酵素が助けて初めて動く場面を思い浮かべると定着します。なお coenzyme は cofactor の一種なので、両者を同義語として覚えないこともポイントです。
