解説 Definition
歯を支持する組織（歯肉と歯槽骨）の炎症性疾患。細菌感染により引き起こされ、歯周病の一種で、進行すると歯の喪失につながる。
Periodontitis is a serious infection of the gums and the tissue around the teeth. It usually develops when gum disease becomes worse and can damage the support for the teeth. This is a medical or dental term, not an everyday word.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
医療語でまず `-itis` を見たら「炎症」を疑う、と覚えておくと強いです。tonsillitis（扁桃炎）や hepatitis（肝炎）と同じ型なので、periodontitis もまず「何かの炎症」と当たりをつけられます。さらに `periodontal disease` の periodontal と結びつけると、歯そのものではなく歯ぐきや歯槽骨など歯の周囲の組織の病気だと整理しやすいです。cavity は虫歯、gingivitis は歯肉炎、periodontitis はより深い歯周組織まで進んだ炎症、という段階差で覚えると混同しにくくなります。
