解説 Definition
微小粒子や液滴が、液体・気体・固体などの媒質中に分散している系を指します。牛乳、霧、ゲル、エアロゾルなどが代表例で、完全に溶けた溶液とは区別されます。
A colloid is a mixture in which very small particles are spread through another substance without fully dissolving. It is a science word used in chemistry and physics. Milk, fog, and some gels are common kinds of colloids.

colloid はまず語尾 -oid に注目すると覚えやすいです。android や asteroid と同じで「〜のような」という感覚があり、colloid も“均一に見えるけれど、実は細かな粒子が散っている物質状態”だと捉えると残ります。milk, fog, gel のように見た目はなめらかでも、solution のように完全には溶けていない点が重要。分散媒は液体だけとは限らず、固体や気体の場合もある中間のイメージで整理すると混同しにくいです。

"Colloid" comes from Greek kolla, meaning "glue," plus -oid, meaning "like" or "resembling."
