自分の行動や失敗、不都合な事実を受け入れやすくするために、あとからもっともらしい理由を付けて正当化すること。心理学では自己防衛の一種として扱われ、客観的に正しい説明というより、納得するための言い訳や理屈付けを指すことが多い。
