diggings は dig + -ing + 複数語尾 -s で「掘った場所・採掘地」を表す語。dig は中英語 diggen を経て古英語 dician に通じ、ditch や dike と同系なので、単なる動作でなく「掘ってできた場所」の感覚がこの語に残っている。
Diggings is built from dig with the noun ending -ing and plural -s. Dig goes back through Middle English and is related to old words behind ditch and dike. Because of that history, the word developed from the act of digging to the place made by digging.
