Rationalisation is the process of making a system, business, or activity more efficient and better organized, often by reducing waste or unnecessary parts. In some contexts, it can also mean giving logical-sounding reasons to justify a decision or behavior.

rational を知っていれば、「理性的・合理的な状態にしていくこと」という軸で覚えやすい語。形は rational + -ise/-ize + -ation で、「〜化すること」。会社文脈では rationalisation of operations / staffing のように、重複やムダを削って効率化・再編する意味が多い。ニュースでは人員整理と結びつくこともある。一方で「自分の行動に後から理屈をつけること」という意味もあり、justification に近いが、より“理屈で整えてしまう”感じ。英式は s、米式は z。
