competency の語源・成り立ち Etymology
competencyはラテン語 competere にさかのぼり、com-「共に」＋petere「求める・向かう」から成る。competeやcompetentと同根で、本来は「条件にかなう」が核なので、そこから「必要に見合う能力」という意味が自然に立ち上がる。
Competency goes back to Latin competere, built from com- "together" and petere "to seek" or "to aim at." The older sense was about being suitable, fitting, or meeting what is required. From that, competency came to mean having enough ability for a task. It shares its root with competent and compete.
