覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
condensed は condense の語末 e を落として -ed を付けた過去分詞形で、形容詞では「ぎゅっと密にされた」。語末は /t/ と発音し /kənˈdenst/。condensed version は要約版、condensed milk は水分を減らした練乳。dense「密な」と結び付け、物質にも情報にも使えると覚える。
Condensed comes from condense: drop the final e and add -ed. As an adjective, it presents something as having been packed, concentrated, or shortened. Connect it with dense, “closely packed.” A condensed version contains the main information in less space, while condensed milk has had much of its water removed and is commonly sweetened. The ending is pronounced /t/ after the /s/ sound, giving /kənˈdenst/. Picture either many pages compressed into a summary or liquid reduced to a thicker product.

condensed の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 condensare(con-「共に」+ densare「密にする」←densus「密な」)に由来。密度を高めて凝縮するイメージ。関連語:dense(密な)、density(密度)。「共に密にする→凝縮する」という成り立ちから、情報や液体をぎゅっと詰める意味が生まれた。
Condensed is the past participle and adjective formed from condense. Condense ultimately comes from Latin condensare, “to make dense,” built from con-, “together,” and densare, derived from densus, “thick” or “dense.” The physical idea of packing matter closely or changing vapor into liquid later extended naturally to language and information: a long work can be condensed when its essential content is expressed in a shorter form.
