解説 Definition

To unconsciously fill a gap in memory with invented information that the person believes is true. The term is mainly used in psychology and medicine and does not imply deliberate deception.

Memory Tip

Connect the fabula element with the idea of a story being constructed to fill a memory gap. Remember that this is different from lying because the person does not know that the information is false.

Etymology

It comes from the Latin confabulari, meaning “talk together,” which combines elements meaning “together” and “speak.” The earlier sense of friendly conversation later developed into this specialized psychological sense.
