A contaminant is a substance that makes something dirty, impure, or unsafe. The word is often used in science, health, and environmental contexts for harmful material in air, water, food, or soil.

contaminant はラテン語 contaminare「汚す」由来で、con-「共に」＋ tangere 系の「触れる」が奥にあるとされます。『汚れたものに触れて一緒になる』感覚から、「汚染物質」へ伸びたと考えると腑に落ちます。tangent や tangible も同じ「触れる」の語根です。
Contaminant comes from Latin contaminare, meaning "to pollute" or "defile." It is thought to contain con- and a root related to touching, the same family seen in tangible and tangent. The idea seems to be that something becomes unclean by contact, and from that it developed the sense of a polluting substance.
