解説 Definition
文書やデータにタグ、注釈、記号を加え、構造・意味・表示方法を機械にも人にも分かる形で示すことです。HTML や XML などの文脈で、本文そのものではなく本文をどう解釈するかを指定する層を指します。
Markup is the amount added to the cost of something in order to decide its selling price. It is mainly used in business, sales, and retail contexts. In technical fields, it can also mean special symbols or tags added to text to control structure or formatting.

markup は句動詞 mark up からできた名詞で、mark は古英語 mearcian「印を付ける」、up も古英語由来です。もともと値札や原価に上向きの印を書き足す感覚なので、「上乗せ額・値上げ分」という意味に自然につながります。関連語は mark, markdown。
