contraception は contra-「反対に」と conception から成り、後者はラテン語 concipere「受け入れる・宿す」にさかのぼります。つまり「受胎に対して働くこと」で、conceive や concept も同じ capere「取る」の流れに属します。
Contraception combines contra- "against" with conception. Conception goes back to Latin concipere, meaning "to take in" or "to receive," from con- and capere "to take." So the word originally meant something that acts against conception. Conceive and concept are from the same root family.
