A cormorant is a large water bird with a long neck that catches fish. It is usually seen near rivers, lakes, or the sea, and it often dives underwater to hunt.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
長いので丸暗記せず、まず cor-mo-rant と3つに切って音で覚える。意味は鳥名の細かな分類より、「水辺で魚を取る黒っぽい長首の鳥」と場面で固定すると残りやすい。pelican のようなくちばし袋はなく、heron のように脚で立つ印象でもない。むしろ水中に潜って魚を追う担当、と置くのがコツ。翼を広げて乾かす写真や cormorant fishing という表現と結びつけると、他の水鳥名と混同しにくい。
