ハコヤナギはポプラ属の落葉高木で、北米を中心に川辺や湿地など湿度の高い場所に多く生えます。種子は綿状の白い毛に包まれていて、春になると風に乗って周囲に白い綿毛が広がります。成長が早く大きくなるので、川沿いや公園で日陰をつくる存在になります。
