creosoteはドイツ語Kreosotからで、ギリシャ語kreas「肉」＋soter「守る者」を合わせた学術造語です。もとは「肉を腐敗から守るもの」という発想で名づけられ、保存・防腐の働きがそのまま語義になっています。関連語はpancreas、soteriology。
Creosote comes from German Kreosot, a scientific coinage based on Greek roots: kreas "flesh, meat" and soter "saver" or "preserver." The name was created for a substance thought to preserve meat from decay. So its meaning grew directly from the idea of "meat-preserver." A related Greek root appears in pancreas.
