pancreas はギリシャ語 pankreas「全部が肉のようなもの」からで、pan-「すべて」+ kreas「肉」です。膵臓が均質な肉の塊に見えたための名で、見た目が意味に直結しています。panorama の pan- や creatine の krea- と親類です。
Pancreas comes from Greek pankreas, which meant something like "all flesh," from pan- "all" and kreas "flesh." The name was given because the organ looked like a solid mass of flesh. The first part is the same pan- seen in words like panorama.
