Cryptography is the study and practice of protecting information by changing it into a secret code. It is used in computers, online communication, banking, and security systems. The goal is to keep information safe from people who should not read it.

encrypt / decrypt を知っていれば、crypt- は「隠す」系の語だとつかめます。さらに geography, biography の -graphy は「記述・学問」で見覚えがある形なので、cryptography は「隠して扱うための記述・技術」→暗号学と覚えると定着しやすいです。encryption が実際の暗号化処理を指しやすいのに対し、cryptography は方式・理論・設計まで含む広い語。public-key cryptography, modern cryptography などの形で頻出。cryptic（意味が分かりにくい）も同じ仲間です。

cryptography はギリシャ語 kryptos「隠された」+ graphia「書くこと」に由来し、文字どおり「隠して書く技術」です。だから内容を読めない形にして伝える学問を指すようになりました。cryptic や encrypt にも同じ crypt-「隠す」の感覚が残っています。
Cryptography comes from Greek kryptos, meaning "hidden," and graphia, meaning "writing." The original idea was literally "hidden writing." It later became the name for methods of writing messages so their contents are concealed; related English words include cryptic, encrypt, and crypt.
