牛などの反芻動物が一度飲み込んだ後、口に戻して再び噛む食物のこと。
Cud is partly digested food that cows and some other animals bring back up from the stomach to chew again. It is used when talking about animals that chew their food more than once, such as cattle. The word is mainly used in biology or farming contexts.

cud の語源・成り立ち Etymology
cud は古英語 cudu / cwidu にさかのぼり、さらにゲルマン祖語 *kweduz「樹脂・噛むもの」に由来します。もともと「口の中で噛む塊」という発想なので、反芻動物がもう一度かみ返す食物を cud と呼ぶのが腑に落ちます。関連語は quid。
Cud comes from Old English cudu or cwidu and goes back to an early Germanic root. It originally referred to something chewed in the mouth. From that idea, it came to mean the mass of food that an animal brings up and chews again. A related English word is quid.
