A sitar is a long-necked string instrument from South Asia, especially associated with Indian classical music. It is known for its rich, resonant sound and is played by plucking the strings.

sitar はペルシア語 setār に由来し、se「三」+ tār「弦」に分けられる、もとは「三弦の楽器」という名です。名が構造をそのまま語っており、setar や dotar にも同じ tār「弦」の語根が見えます。
Sitar comes from Persian setar, made from se "three" and tar "string." It originally meant a "three-stringed" instrument, so the name described its structure directly. The same tar root appears in names of other instruments such as setar and dotar.
