解説 Definition
「curling」とは、氷上で行われるスポーツで、ストーンと呼ばれる石を滑らせてターゲットに近づけることを競います。スコットランド発祥のスポーツで、冬季オリンピックの競技種目にもなっています。また、髪を巻き毛にすることを指す言葉でもあります。
Curling is a sport in which players slide heavy stones across ice toward a circular target while teammates sweep the surface to influence their speed and direction. The word can also refer to making hair form curls, especially in compounds such as curling iron.

Curling is formed from curl and the suffix -ing. Curl entered English through forms related to Middle Dutch krullen and Middle Low German krullen, meaning “to curl.” The Scottish sport received its name from the movement associated with its stones across the ice. The same formation also describes the process of shaping something, particularly hair, into curls.
