解説 Definition
化学式(CN)2で表される無色の有毒気体。炭素と窒素から成る化合物で、燃焼や化学反応の過程で生じることがある。毒性が高いため、化学実験や工業分野では発生の有無や濃度を厳重に管理する必要がある。
Cyanogen is a very poisonous gas made from carbon and nitrogen. The word is mainly used in chemistry and is not common in everyday English.

cyanogen はフランス語 cyanogène を経て英語に入った化学語で、cyano- + -gen に分けられる。cyano- はギリシャ語 kyanos「濃い青」、-gen は「生む」を表し、最初に青色顔料プルシアンブルーから得られたため、「青を生むもの」の名が化合物名になった。関連語は cyan、cyanide。
