英国植民地時代の総督 Lord De La Warr（デ・ラ・ウォー男爵、Thomas West）に由来。フランス語 de la guerre（戦争の）が姓の起源とされる。デラウェア湾・川の名が先住民の呼称と混同されつつ州名に定着した。人名が地名になった典型例。
The place name Delaware ultimately honors Thomas West, Lord De La Warr, an English colonial governor. His title was first applied to the bay and river and later to the surrounding region and state. The surname and title are of European origin; the modern spelling became established as an English geographical name. The same place name was also applied by Europeans to the Indigenous Delaware people, also known as the Lenape.
