yang は中国語の 陽 yáng に由来し、もとは「山の陽が当たる側」という感覚から「明るい・日なたの・男性的」へ広がった語。太陽や陽気と同じ 陽 を思えば、yin と対になる「陽」がなぜプラスの力を表すか腑に落ちる。
