Discoverers are people who find or identify something for the first time. The word is often used for explorers, scientists, or researchers. It usually refers to an important new place, fact, object, or idea.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず discover を分解して覚えると定着しやすいです。cover が「覆う」なので、dis-cover は「覆いが外れて見つかる」という感覚。そこに -er で「〜する人」、-s で複数がつき、discoverers は「発見する人たち」。discovery が「発見」、discover が動詞、discoverer が単数と並べて覚えると系列で残ります。inventor は「発明した人」、explorer は「探検する人」で、discoverer は“実際に新しいものを見つけた人”に寄る語です。

ラテン語 discooperire（dis-「除去」+ cooperire「覆う」）が古フランス語 descovrir を経て英語に入った。「覆いを取り除く→見つける」が原義。関連語: discover, discovery。接尾辞 -er は行為者を示し、未知のものの覆いを剥がす人という意味になる。
Discoverers comes from discover plus the agent ending -er. Discover came through Old French from a Latin form meaning "to uncover," made from dis- "away" and a root meaning "cover." The meaning shifted from removing a cover to finding something previously unknown, so discoverers are literally people who "uncover" things.
