A diskette is a small, thin magnetic disk used in the past to store computer data. It was common before CDs, USB drives, and cloud storage became popular, so today it is mostly used when talking about older technology.

disk を知っていればほぼ見抜ける語です。語尾の -ette は「小さいもの」を作る形で、diskette はそのまま「小さな disk」。まず disk→円盤状の記憶媒体、そこに「小型版」という感覚を足すと定着しやすいです。意味は現代のUSBではなく、昔のコンピュータで使った保存媒体。floppy disk と並べて覚えると場面が浮かびます。disc / disk の綴りゆれに惑わされやすいですが、IT文脈では disk がよく出ます。かなり古い語なので、今は歴史的なコンピュータ用語として見ることが多い点も一緒に覚えると混乱しません。
