distaff は古英語の distaf に由来し、dis「亜麻の束」+ staff「棒」から成る、糸紡ぎ用の棒のことでした。staff や stave も同根で、核は「支える棒」です。糸紡ぎが女性の役割と結びついたため、そこから「母系の家系」を指すようになりました。
Distaff comes from Old English distaf, made from dis, meaning a bundle of flax, and staff, meaning a stick or rod. It first meant the stick that held flax for spinning. Because spinning was strongly linked with women's work, the word later also came to refer to the female side of a family line.
