staveは古英語stæf「棒・杖」にさかのぼるゲルマン系語で、もとは細長い木の棒のことでした。その木片が樽の板を指し、さらに棒で押し返す動作からstave off「食い止める」に広がったと見ると、二つの意味が一本の木でつながります。staffやflagstaffが同根です。
