starve は古英語 steorfan「死ぬ」に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *sterbanan にさかのぼる語で、もとは飢えに限らず「死ぬ」全般でした。starvation やドイツ語 sterben も同根で、「死ぬ」がとくに「飢えて死ぬ」へ意味を狭めたと知ると、切迫感の強さが見えてきます。
Starve comes from Old English steorfan, which originally meant simply "to die," not only from lack of food. It goes back to a Germanic root also seen in German sterben. Over time, the meaning narrowed in English to "die from hunger," and then more generally "suffer from extreme lack."
