解説 Definition
distilleries は distillery(蒸留所)の複数形です。ウイスキーやジンなど、蒸留によって酒や液体を作る施設を複数指します。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
distill「蒸留する」と施設を表す -ery を結び付けましょう。distillery は子音字+y で終わるため、複数形では y を i に替えて -es を付けます。
Link distill with -ery, a suffix associated with a place of production. Since distillery ends in a consonant plus y, change y to i and add -es to form distilleries.

distilleries の語源・成り立ち Etymology
distilleries は distillery の複数形で、語幹 distill は中世ラテン語 distillare「しずくとなって落ちる」に由来し、-ery は「場所」を表す接尾辞です。液体を滴らせて成分を取り出す場所という原義から「蒸留所」となったので、語の形と意味がきれいにつながります。関連語は distill, instill。
Distilleries is the regular plural form of distillery. Distillery was formed from distill with the place-forming suffix -ery. Distill came through French from Medieval Latin distillare, originally associated with liquid falling in drops; it is related to Latin stillare, “to drip.” As controlled heating and condensation became central to the process, distill acquired its modern technical sense, and distillery came to mean a place equipped to perform it.
