divulge はラテン語 divulgare「公にする」からで、dis-「広く」+ vulgus「民衆」が核です。もとは「みんなのものにする」で、秘密を暴露する意味は「内輪の情報を群衆へ投げる」感覚。vulgar や Vulgate も同じ vulg- を持ちます。
Divulging comes from divulge, from Latin divulgare, meaning "to make public." It is based on vulgus, "the common people," also seen in vulgar and Vulgate. The sense moved from making something known to everyone to revealing something that had been private or secret.
