カルシウムとマグネシウムを含む炭酸塩鉱物で、白色や灰色を示すことが多く、石灰岩に似た性質をもちます。建材や耐火材、土壌改良材、化学工業の原料として利用されるほか、この鉱物を多く含む岩石名としても使われます。
