ogle はおそらく低地ドイツ語 oegeln「目を向ける」系で、語幹は「目」を表すゲルマン語にさかのぼる。英語 eye やドイツ語 Auge も同系で、「目で執拗に追う」感じから、じろじろ見る意味になった。
Ogle probably comes from a Low German verb meaning "to look at," built from a Germanic root for "eye." That same root appears in English eye and German Auge. The meaning shifted from simply directing the eyes toward something to staring at someone in a strong or persistent way.
