drake「雄のアヒル」は中英語 drake、さらに古いゲルマン系の語に由来し、古形 *andraca では「アヒルの長・雄」といった感覚でした。群れの中の目立つ雄を名づけた語で、関連語に sheldrake や古形 andrake があります。
Drake, meaning a male duck, comes from Middle English drake and older Germanic forms. An earlier form, *andraca, seems to have referred specifically to the male bird, probably as the more striking or leading one in a group.
