drenchは、人や物を水や別の液体でひどくぬらし、全体がすっかり濡れた状態にすることを表す動詞。雨・波・汗・ソースなどで完全に覆うようにぬらす場面で使われ、比喩的に感情や光などを「たっぷり浴びせる」意味でも使われる。

drench は古英語 drencan にさかのぼり、さらに「飲む」の drincan と同根です。もともとは「飲ませる・水に沈める」で、そこから「びしょ濡れにする」へ発展しました。drink や drunk も同じ根で、水をたっぷり与える感覚が今の意味につながります。
