A chancellery is the office or official residence of a chancellor, prime minister, or similar high government leader. It can also mean the administrative office of an embassy or other diplomatic mission.

Chancellery came into English through French chancellerie from Medieval Latin cancellaria. Its deeper root is Latin cancelli, meaning "lattice" or "grating," because officials worked behind a screened-off space.
