chaser は chase に行為者・物を表す -er が付いた形で、chase は古フランス語 chacer、さらに後期ラテン語 captiare「捕まえようとする」にさかのぼります。基本は『後を追うもの』なので、酒場では強い酒の後を追って飲む水や炭酸水、つまり口直し用の飲み物を指すようになりました。
Chaser comes from chase with the ending -er, meaning "one that does." Chase came from Old French chacier and goes back to Late Latin captiare, meaning "try to catch." The older root also appears in capture and catch, so the word originally had a strong sense of pursuing in order to seize.
