dais は古フランス語 deis「テーブル・高くした板」から来て、さらにラテン語 discus、ギリシャ語 diskos「円盤・皿」につながります。もともと板や台のイメージをもつ語なので、式典で一段高く設けた「台」を dais と呼ぶのは自然です。関連語は disk、discus。
Dais came from Old French deis, which referred to a table or raised board. That form is linked more distantly to Latin discus and Greek diskos, words for a disk or flat round object, also seen in disk and discus. The meaning shifted toward a raised platform, probably because of the idea of a flat elevated surface.
