rostrum はラテン語 rostrum「くちばし・船首の突角」から来た語で、古代ローマでは敵船の船首飾りで飾った演説台を Rostra と呼びました。そこから「人前で話す台」の意味が定着し、rostral や rostrate にも「くちばし状」の原義が残ります。
Rostrum comes from Latin rostrum, which first meant a bird's beak or a pointed ship's prow. In ancient Rome, public speaking platforms were decorated with the prows of captured ships and were called rostra. From that historical image, the word came to mean a platform for speaking.
