覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
lecture を知っていれば連想しやすい語。講義や朗読では、話し手が原稿や本を見ながら話すが、その紙を置く胸の前の傾いた台が lectern。普通の desk ではなく、「立って読む人の前にある読み台」という絵で覚えると残りやすい。podium は壇・演台全体を指すことがあり、lectern は手元の原稿台そのもの、という差もセットで確認。stand at the lectern, place notes on the lectern, church lectern など典型場面ごと覚えると定着する。
Connect `lectern` with `lecture`. In a lecture or reading, the speaker often stands behind a sloping stand for notes or a book. Remember it as the special stand for reading while standing, not just any desk.

lectern の語源・成り立ち Etymology
lectern は古フランス語 letron を経て、中世ラテン語 lectrinum「読書台」から来た語です。さらに奥はラテン語 legere「読む・拾い集める」に通じ、lecture や legend と同根なので、「読むための台」だと考えると意味が腑に落ちます。
"Lectern" came into English through Old French from Medieval Latin "lectrinum," meaning a reading stand. It goes back to Latin "legere," meaning "to read" or "to gather." The idea is simply a stand used for reading, and it shares its root with English words like "lecture" and "legend."
